The launch of Sputnik 1 showed clearly that the US had lost its leadership in space technology. In 2002, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/science\/discoveries\/news\/2002\/07\/53475\">Computnik crisis<\/a> followed when Japan introduced its <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth_simulator\">Earth Simulator<\/a>, the world&#8217;s fastest super computer at that time. The US had lost its pole position in high performance computing, at least until the Earth Simulator&#8217;s capacity was surpassed by IBM&#8217;s <a title=\"Blue Gene\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blue_Gene\">Blue Gene\/L<\/a> prototype in 2004.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yesterday, China announced (see <a href=\"http:\/\/insidehpc.com\/2010\/10\/27\/china-benchmarks-worlds-fastest-super-2-5-petaflops-powered-by-gpus\/\">inside HPC<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpcwire.com\/blogs\/New-China-GPGPU-Super-Outruns-Jaguar-105987389.html\">HPC wire<\/a> news) that their new Tianhe-1A super computer has set a new performance record of 2.507 petaflops on the LINPACK benchmark, making it the fastest system in the world today. The Tianhe-1A super computer will probably lead the next <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top500.org\">Top-500<\/a> list, which will be published in the next few weeks.
